Contemporary Tiled Concrete Fireplace - Large Format Ultra-Thin Wall Tiles made in Canada

Our concrete tiles are as beautiful as they are functional. Our clients use our hand cast artisan concrete tiles indoors and outdoors, on floors or on fireplaces. Below are pictures of a contemporary concrete tiled fireplace that we custom designed and created for our West Kelowna client.

Our ultra thin concrete tiles serve as a truly unique surfacing medium. Handcrafted from start to finish, our concrete tiles will give any surface lots of personality. Our custom made large format concrete tiles will easily withstand fireplace heat. Ultra-thin high performance concrete is mixed up, poured into custom made forms and finished to perfection. Concrete camouflages magnificently and gets a lovely patina with the wear and tear it's exposed to over it's life.

For the above project we've used concrete panels to tile the fireplace from floor to ceiling. Created and designed by pros at MODE CONCRETE in Kelowna BC.

Concrete Countertop and Floor Concerns - also featuring Concrete Countertops in a Traditional Renovated Kitchen

some top questions and concerns we get asked about decorative concrete

Why Concrete?  Concrete is one of the strongest, most customizable, unique, and durable options out there. That is why designers, architects, and builders have been using this medium for years.  Totally pliable, hand cast, it will have it's own individualization, and will carry on a life of it's own.  The most amazing thing about concrete... wear and tear only add more beauty. Concrete lovers embrace the imperfections that occur naturally and the personality it will develop over it's long life - think of it as part of the family.

Concrete is for:
  • lovers of natural stone
  • clients wanting something completely unique, hand made and one of a kind
  • people concerned about being environmentally friendly and love mother nature
  • clients wanting the durability of stone don't want mass produced, store bought, easy found items
  • clients that want limitless options of colors, additives, stains, finishes or shapes
  • clients wanting to use a natural looking material that compliments other natural materials like wood, stone and brick

Myths and top concerns about concrete:
  • is concrete green and environmentally conscience - made of stone, sand and water, a product doesn't get much more simple than this.  Those are the materials that make concrete.  In addition, when we make terrazzo countertops or floors, we only use post-consumer recycled glass.  At the end of its life cycle, your concrete project itself can be recycled.
  • concrete can easily crack or chip - imperfections in concrete surfaces, countertops, sinks or floors are part of the appeal and the uniqueness. In fact, hairline cracks and slight irregularities are the thing we love the most.  Wear and tear on our decorative concrete surfaces will not affect the structural integrity in the slightest (fine cracks are too narrow to trap food and debris). People look forward to the aged appearance that that occurs naturally over time. No matter what reinforcing method is used, hairline cracks may still occur. Hairline cracks are non-structural and should be considered part of the character and uniqueness of your hand crafted item - we call them beauty marks.
  • concrete can easily stain, is too porous, and requires to much maintenance - Top quality sealers and waxes are used to protect all of our concrete which help to resist stains and scratches. Using a nonabrasive natural cleaner and wiping up your stains will help to avoid staining and keep your concrete looking beautiful for years. Concrete has similar properties to other natural stone surfaces like travertine, soapstone, marble or granite - take care of them and they'll last you a lifetime.  Depending on what sealers or waxes have been applied to your concrete, periodic reapplications may be required.
  • concrete is too modern for me - Concrete is super versatile and can be easily customized to fit into any space. It can be modern, simple and industrial, or it can be stained or dyed to a warmer color for a more traditional look. Whether your style is eclectic, classic, retro, funky, or modern - we have lots of options that will compliment your space.

Here is a concrete counter top MODE CONCRETE completed in the Okanagan, for a client with a more traditional, natural color palette.  We colored the concrete to a natural earthtoned sandy color.

Sealing and Waxing Concrete Floors - An Easy, Cost-Effective way to Create a Style Statement

An existing concrete floor that MODE CONCRETE sealed and waxed.  We didn't add any color or pigment.  This is natural standard grey concrete - and we are in and out within usually 2 days!  A quick and stylish fix to any new and existing concrete surface.

How do you prepare concrete for sealer, wax or stain??
  • Thoroughly clean (pressure wash if necessary) and de-grease your concrete, allow to totally dry out.  Typically wait a few days before sealer, wax, or stain application.
  • Create a test section or test sample pieces, to see exact coloring and finishing is to your preference (don't do the test in direct sunlight).
  • All applications of sealer, wax and stains should be done in thin coats opposed to heavy thick coats.  Wait at least 2 hours between coats.
  • If applying on outdoor concrete surfaces only do in warmer seasons (or hoard off and heat area).
  • Allow 24 hours to dry before regular traffic.
  • Apply in well ventilated areas.  Be careful of sparks from fans and electrical devices if using any flammable liquids.
  • Always wear appropriate protective gear, follow manufacturers application instructions and gain knowledge on the products you anticipate using.
  • Sealers are usually best applying with a spray gun, while wax is usually mopped on. But make sure to check your product directions and see what they recommend.
  • Hot days are not the best for applying sealers.

Why should you seal and wax your concrete?
  • It creates and maintains a natural luster and shine that is a characteristic of maintained concrete.
  • Increases the longevity and life of the concrete.
  • Makes your concrete resist moisture, staining, and helps to prevent surface damage.
  • Anti-slip and other additives can also be added, if you're concerned about slipping on the concrete.
  • Various sheens and matte finishes are available, depending on your style preference.
  • Brings out the natural irregularities, patinas and patterns that occur in concrete - in our opinion this is the best thing!

Add Excitement to a Beautiful Fireplace with a Concrete Hearth

Concrete has become the new material of choice for designers around the world.  Custom concrete is leading the way in design, innovation, longevity and style.  If you are looking to add some style to your home, office or exterior living space, concrete can add a punch of personality to any space.  From hearths to furniture, concrete is the perfect solution for many people.

Inside or outside, the strength of concrete easily stands up to weather and the intense heat of fire. All custom concrete hearths and fireplace mantles are sealed with top quality sealers which protects against staining and porosity.

The best thing we have noticed about concrete around a fire feature is that it embraces the heat, ash, wood, and gains character over time.  With concrete we embrace the freckles, veins and imperfections that naturally occur as the concrete ages.  It is totally raw, one-of-a-kind, incredibly strong, hand cast, hand honed, and 100% customizable.  If you want to use the best and most innovative decorative concrete contractors in the Okanagan, call us today for a free estimate.

Cool and Modern Concrete Floors

If you want ultra-modern style and major design impact, consider concrete floors - the flooring for the stylish at heart.  Concrete floors give a super-modern look, industrial look - and like freckles, concrete floors help to camouflage wear as it gets older.  With concrete we embrace and look forward to variations, irregularities, and the patina that develops with wear over time.

There are good reasons why interior designers often choose concrete for their most cutting edge spaces. Stained, colored, textured or smooth, concrete boasts limitless design options. It provides a blank canvas upon which homeowners can leave their mark.  But beyond the design advantages, these surfaces are low maintenance and they blend seamlessly with the architectural aesthetics of various design styles.

Above is a picture of a concrete floor that MODE CONCRETE created

Concrete Flooring Benefits:
  • STYLISH - Undeniably gorgeous, original, one of kind and a piece of art. Homeowners love their concrete floors for their personality. Some owners opt for aesthetic simplicity, while others take advantage of the broad choice of colors and textures available.
  • ENERGY EFFICIENCY - Concrete floors can help you save energy. They feel cooler in the summer, so there is less of a need to use air conditioning. During the winter, concrete floors absorb the heat from the sun, helping to keep your home warm. For those with radiant-heated floors, concrete is the best flooring surface to maximize heat conduction and minimize energy usage.  Some worry that a concrete floor will be cold and hard on their feet. The truth is that finished concrete floors are no colder or hard-feeling as other common flooring types like ceramic tiles, stone and marble.
  • SUSTAINABILITY - Using concrete floors helps to minimize waste, unlike other types of flooring, such as carpet, which creates waste from padding and carpet scraps. Also, concrete does not contain the harmful VOCs (volatile organic compounds) that many synthetic carpets do.
  • NON SLIP SURFACE - Especially with an added glossy finish, you would think concrete floors would be slippery. But the truth is that as long as your floor is installed by a professional, it should not be slippery. Standard practice and appropriate top coats, ensure that a non-slip additive is applied to the final finish of the floor.
  • DURABILITY - If they are properly installed and maintained, concrete floors rarely need replacement and there is virtually no maintenance with concrete floors.
  • LOW MAINTENANCE - Maintenance is simple. Just vacuum or sweep and follow up with a damp mop. The amount of traffic your floors receive will determine the amount of maintenance it will need. A concrete floor with normal traffic will probably need a reapplication of the finish every 2-3 years. Keep in mind that concrete is the most abrasive-resistant and durable floor. Proper installation also means that you won't have to worry about moisture vapors. Vapor barriers should be installed under the concrete slab to block moisture and dampness. Keep in mind that hiring a professional concrete floor installer is the best way to ensure that you won't have problems later.
  • COST - Some considerations; size of job, detail (is it a basic application of stain or dye or more detailed design), preparation requirements, time frame, products and materials used (hardware store brand or professional grade) and finally, the experience level of the installer (a more experienced professional concrete artist/craftsman will charge more).

And another picture of a concrete floor that MODE CONCRETE created.
